FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Places! Productions?
Places! is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving primarily Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, and Queen Creek in Arizona. We currently produce musicals and plays and provide educational opportunities in the performing arts.
What are the ages ranges for shows?
We provide opportunities for actors of all ages! Ages requirements are announced per show.
Are volunteer hours required to participate?
No. While we encourage all families to help out, there is no requirement for volunteering. All community members are welcome to help out in any area! Please contact us as [email protected] to get involved!
What's the cost of tuition, and what’s included in tuition?
Scripts, costumes, props, all supplies, and a show shirt. Actors will be asked to provide shoes and under clothes. Tuition for each show is $300 or $200 per sibling. We use tuition to not only partially fund the sets, costumes, and props, but also to pay licensing fees and hire qualified directors.
Is tuition required for adult performers?
No. Tuition is only for youth performers. Adults will be considered those ages 18 and up for our community shows. 18-year-olds will still be required to apply for scholarships to be exempt from tuition for our youth shows.
Are scholarships available?
Yes! Scholarships are available for all of our shows. We will not turn away any performer due to financial need. There is a scholarship application that has a few questions. This application is required to be considered for a scholarship.
The scholarship application is due two weeks before the audition/start of the program for which you are applying. Applications submitted after auditions will not be accepted.
Applications must be submitted for each new show/program.
You will receive an email after your application has been reviewed by the Board of Directors. By accepting a scholarship, you are agreeing to attend all rehearsals not on your conflict calendar, including optional load in and strike (family members may attend load in/strike in your place).
Scholarships for future programs will not be granted to students who accept scholarships and later drop the program and/or students who miss scheduled rehearsals.
What are rehearsal schedules like for shows?
Currently, we rehearse primarily Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Quickly after the show is cast, we send out a rehearsal schedule for the entire process: rehearsals, tech, and shows. Not every actor will be called to every rehearsal. We have very few changes or additions to the rehearsal schedule once it’s set.
Are conflicts with the rehearsal process allowed?
Yes. We do our best to work around everyone’s schedules, but, of course, having a lot of conflicts does affect casting.
What is the audition/casting process like?
The first step is to fill out our audition registration form. Shortly after, you will be sent a scheduling form. We usually have one night of auditions on a Friday. Immediately after this audition, a callback list is sent out. Callbacks are usually held the Saturday after auditions. If you register for auditions, you will also be sent a link with all of the possible callback material at least a couple weeks before the auditions. We do suggest you look at this material before the audition to be prepared in case you receive a callback.
After callbacks, all actors in consideration for the show will be sent a tentative rehearsal schedule and asked to confirm conflicts. Conflicts that arise after this point may affect casting and will affect future casting.
The cast list is sent out 1-5 days after callbacks, depending on when rehearsals begin.
All actors cast will receive an email with all the important info for the production shortly after being cast. All communication for the process will be sent via email.
Can actors audition without filling out the registration form?
Yes, and we will see you as quickly as we can in between scheduled auditions, though you might have a bit of a wait.
Are all actors who audition cast in the show?
Our mission is to always give as many opportunities as possible. However, show needs and cast sizes vary, so we cannot always cast all auditioners. Everyone registered in our summer shows is guaranteed casting.
We double cast as many roles as possible to both give extra opportunities and have an option in the case of illness.
Are fingerprint clearance cards required for instructors?
Yes. All adults that work directly with our performers have a current fingerprint clearance card on file with us. Additionally, parents who volunteer backstage must also have a fingerprint clearance card.
What is Presto/Ping?
Presto and Ping are our show choirs. Ping is for grades K-6 and meets Mondays 5-6pm. Presto is for grades 7-12 and meets 6-7pm. Tuition for both groups is $50 a month, or $200 for the full semester (a $50 discount if paid during the first month of rehearsal). Sometimes they combine rehearsals 5-7pm. Both groups perform at several community events throughout the year. They usually travel to California to perform at a theme park in March, depending on group interest/availability.
Are you accepting applications for new directors, choreographers, and instructors?
Resumes are accepted via email at all times. These will be considered per project. All artistic roles are paid positions.
How do donations work?
Donations are accepted year round and are tax deductible. Donations may be made on tour donation page of our website, cash, check, or Zelle. All donors (unless requesting to be anonymous) will be thanked in our program and posted on our website. Business sponsors may include ads in our programs and on our website. Each year in December, the Donor of the Year will be announced at a performance.
